Constantius Gallus

Constantius Gallus
Constantius Gallus

Flavius Claudius Constantius Gallus (326–354) was a Roman emperor in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire from 351 to 354, as a junior colleague (caesar) of the augustus, his cousin Constantius II. He belonged to the Constantinian dynasty, which had supplied emperors since Constantius Chlorus was appointed caesar by Diocletian. The family monopolized imperial power under Constantine the Great, during whose reign Gallus was born and whose daughter – the augusta Constantina – Gallus married. As caesar he dealt with a Jewish revolt (351–352) lead by and ruled from Antioch, but the senior emperor came to mistrust him, and ultimately Constantius II had him assassinated and replaced with his younger half-brother Julian.
